Summary:
"Footprints without Feet" by H.G. Wells is a story revolving around a scientist who had become invisible and his life after that.

Griffin was a brilliant scientist. He had carried out an experiment which could make the human body invisible. But,he was a lawless and short-tempered person. When his landlord tried to eject him,he set fire to the house and got away naked. In this process,he had become invisible. Also,a homeless wanderer. But his troubles were yet to be ended.

It was winter season in London and he was trembling every now and then. Finally,he found shelter in a garments shop.He fitted himself out with the warm clothes in the store. He also treated himself with a meal from the restaurant. Finally,he slept on a pile of quilts. However, trouble followed him here too.

Next morning, when he was awaking, the storekeepers and his assistants were already arriving. He panicked and began to run.In order to stay ahead of the assistants,he finally had to part ways with his clothes.Again,he was completely exposed to chill air of January.

He again went to a shop where costumes are made for dramatists and finds a nice set of clothes and a length of dangling bandages which helped him to conceal his invisible body.

He decided to move away from London and travelled to the village of Iping. He resided there in Mrs.Hall's inn after paying her in advance. His arrival during the Winter season was a strange happening.

He,then, resorts to stealing money from the clergyman's house. He,then, paid money to Mrs.Hall which mad everyone suspicious that the scientist has definitely something to do with the theft at the clergyman's house.

A little later that morning,Mr.Hall and Mrs.Hall decided to investigate the scientist room as they found it to be open that day. After going inside, they found that the bedsheet was cold which meant that the scientist was up for some time now.The clothes and the bandages he wore were also lying on the bed. Then, things started to go wrong and chaos ensued.

The hat which was near the bedpost leapt up and dashed itself on to the face of Mrs.Hall.Then,the bedroom chair became alive by throwing itself at Mrs.Hall and charging her straight at the legs. The chair eventually pushed them out of the room and slammed the door behind them.

The village constable was sent for secretely. In the meantime,Mrs.Hall went to the scientist and started questioning her in an angry manner. The eccentric scientist was raged at this and opened all his bandages to astonish everyone near him.

Mr.Jaffers, the village constable, arrived at the scene to find to his astonishment that he had to arrest an invisible man.He was obviously struggling to get hold of the man.People found themselves hit by blows which were coming out of nowhere.Griffin had shaken himself free and nobody knew where to catch him.

About Author:
Herbert George Wells(21 September 1866 – 13 August 1946) was an English writer. Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games.Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction".

NCERT Questions:
A)Think about It.

1)Yes,it is true that Griffin was a lawless person. When his landlord tried to eject him,he sets fire to his landlord's house. He robbed a theatrical shop in London and even knocked down the shopkeeper at the shop.Later,in the village of Iping,he robbed the clergyman of his housekeeping money. He also hits the villagers in Iping when his identity was revealed including the police constable Mr.Jaffers.These are some of the instances which show how Griffin was a lawless and notorious person.

2)Griffin was a brilliant scientist though. His capabilities can be easily recognised by the fact that he successfully found a method to make the human body invisible. He was quite great in his field where he had done exemplary work. But,his greatness is reduced by the fact that he was a lawless individual.

B)Talk about It.

1)Yes,I would like to be invisible for sometime but never for a prolonged time. There are various advantages and disadvantages of becoming invisible. One can go to various places undetected and roam around freely without any restrictions.Maybe we can also do a little mischief. But,the disadvantages are also at par.
One cannot interact with others in an effective manner. This will basically cut himself out in the long term.

2)There are various things and forces around us which are invisible.Yes,there are many other aspects of nature which exist but are not visible to us.For example, there is attractive force called gravity which keeps us bound with the Earth.
I think that the world will be a more exciting place to live in if we can see those forces.

3)In water, the electrons are arranged in such a way that instead of reflecting or absorbing the light, they let it pass through the fluid.
Hence, water is transparent. With the innovations in science and technology, the day is not far when scientists will find out a way to make objects invisible.

Summary:
"From the Diary of Anne Frank" authored by Anne Frank herself is actually some chronicles in her diary. She was from a Jewish family and had to hide in Amsterdam during the
World War-II.She was given this diary on her 13th birthday. The diary provided people with a naive description of a Jew's life during Hitler's rule in Germany which also made one of the most famous Holocaust victims ever.

The story starts with Anne telling her diary that writing in a diary is very strange experience for her.She thinks that nobody would be interested in the musings of a small girl. She also feels that by writing by a diary, she would be able to get all kinds of things off my chest.

She thinks that "Paper has more patience than people."She could easily vent out all her feelings and she won't be judged by anybody. She then jots down that actually she has not got a real friend. She admits that perhaps it is her problem that she doesn't confide in each other. She wants her diary to be her friend and she would call this friend "Kitty".

She tells that nobody would understand her entries in the diary unless if she doesn't give a brief sketch of her life. She tells how she has got the most adorable father who didn't marry her mother until she was twenty-five.Her sister Margot was born in Frankfurt in 1926 and she was born on 12th June,1929.They lived in Frankfurt until she was 4.

She also describes some important moments from her life until now.In the sixth form,at the end of the year,Mrs.Kuperus, and she herself were both in tears as they were separated. In the summer of 1941,her grandma fell ill and had to be operated. She passed away in January,1942 and she still loves her a lot.

Then, she came to the present date i.e. 20th June,1942.Here comes her first diary entry.
She tells how her entire class is nervous about who are the one who would be promoted to the next form.Half of their class are betting that who would be promoted to tbe next grade and who would be not promoted. She and her benchmate G.N. cannot stop laughing at these. Her only fear is "Maths".

She then also describes one of her teachers named Mr.Keesing who teaches maths and is annoyed with her.He had warned her many times not to talk in his class. After this,he even assigned her an extra homework to write an essay on "A Chatterbox".That evening after completing her other task, she wrote 3 pages for this. She argued that talking is a student's trait. She also wrote that she could reduce it but cannot eliminate it altogether. She also argued via her essay that she cannot do much about it as it was an inherited trait of her mother.

Eventually, after assigning some more essays, finally Mr.Keesing allowed her to talk. Moreover,he has started to make jokes now.

Difficult Words:
1)Musings:A period of reflection or thought.
2)Stiff-backed:(Here)Hard Cover.

About Author:
Annelies Marie Frank (12 June 1929-February 1945) was a German-Dutch diarist of Jewish heritage. One of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust, she gained fame posthumously with the 1947 publication of The Diary of a Young Girl.

NCERT Questions:
A)Thinking about the Text.

1)Yes,Anne was right when she said that the world would not be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year old girl because nobody knew her.She was yet to become popular.

2)Anne's diary was not very specifically aimed to write it in a specific manner. It didn't follow any specific format. It was a just some diary entries from a young girl and her life.Today, her diary has transformed into an important form of historical literature in where it has shown the pitiful way Jews lived in the reign of the Nazis.

Anne's diary was initially written in Dutch which was later translated into many languages.

3)Anne felt the need to give a brief sketch of her life to the diary to make it understandable for anyone who reads it.She wanted the reader to feel at ease while going through the diary.

Anne had named her diary as Kitty. For her,her diary,'Kitty' is her friend with whom she could share all her secrets. She indeed treated 'Kitty' as an insider. Her diary was her friend with whom it was lot more personal.

4)Anne has tried to explain the feelings for some people in her diary before writing any entry.Anne felt that her father,Otto Frank, was the most adorable father she had ever seen. She loved her grandmother very much and after her death, thought a lot about her.Anne was also very attached in the sixth form ,Mrs.Kuperus, and cried on separation from her.She felt that,Mr.Keesing was very strict and an
old-fashioned person.

Anne's attachment towards the people around her shows that she was very lovable. She tried to find the best in a person.

5)In the first essay, assigned by Mr.Keesing, she tells and discusses about talking and the reasons behind her talkative nature. She justified her talkative nature by putting forward some points such as how talking is any student's trait. She could at best reduce it but cannot eliminate it.She also wrote that as this trait of talking is inherited from her mother and she cannot help this.

6)Mr.Keesing is unpredictable certainly.Initially,he gave Anne unusual punishments such as writing an essay on her talkative nature but finally pardons her altogether. He accepts her talkative nature and allowed her to talk. And surprisingly,he didn't assign her any more task.

7)i)Anne was reserved and was not able to make friends. She doesn't confide easily in anyone.

ii)Anne wanted to be different and be original She wanted to vent out her feelings in her diary rather than jotting them down facts.

iii)Anne has a good sense of humour in her narrative.

iv)Anne is a bit sort of judgemental about others.

v)Anne knew how to put forward arguments convincingly and in a better way.

Summary:
"The Black Aeroplane" by Fredrick Forsyth is an excellent story narrating the plight of a pilot who was up in the air.

The story starts with the pilot flying his old Dakota aeroplane back to England from France. The weather was pleasant and there was not a single cloud in the sky.The stars were shining above him and the moon was also coming up in the background behind him. That was 1:30 AM in the morning.

Through the radio,he called Paris Control and informed them that he was headed towards England. The voice from the radio answered him immediately and instructed him to turn 12 degrees then.He switched to the last fuel tank and steered the aircraft in the said direction.

Everything was fine until he was almost 150 kilometres from Paris. He saw some clouds and they were no less than humongous black mountains. He was in a dilemma then as he could n't fly over them and he didn't have enough fuel to turn back.He decided to take the risk and flew straight into the clouds.

Inside the clouds,it was a complete mess for the lone pilot.Everything was suddenly black and it was impossible to see anything. The old aircraft was tumbling inside the stormy clouds like coins in a piggy-bank.All the instruments were also dead on the aircraft. He had no radio,no compass and he could not know where he was.

Suddenly, amidst the black clouds,he saw another plane which was black in colour. This was the only gleam of hope for him. There was no lights on the plane's wings. The pilot inside the aircraft was waving at him and asking him to follow him. After almost 30 minutes on the air,the black aeroplane started going down and the narrator followed him unhesitatingly.

He was directed to a runway and soon he landed but by then the black aeroplane was nowhere to be seen. After walking away from the old Dakota,he asked the lady in the control center where was the other pilot of the black aeroplane.
The lady laughed at him and said him that he was the only one who was up in the sky in that stormy night.Who was the pilot who helped him still remains a myth.

Difficult Words:
1)Dakota:An aircraft's model.
2)Dead:(Here)Not Working properly.
3)Paris Control:Control Center for Air Traffic in                               Paris.

About Author:
Frederick McCarthy Forsyth CBE (born 25 August 1938) is an English novelist and journalist. Before becoming a journalist, Forsyth completed his National Service in the Royal Air Force as a pilot where he flew the de Havilland Vampire.By 2006, he had sold more than 70 million books in more than 30 languages.

NCERT Questions:
A)Thinking about the Text.

1)The "risk" refers to the act of flying into the storm directly. The pilot took the big risk as he wanted to be home and be with his family. He wanted to take a big fat English breakfast and he was of the opinion that the risk would be worth taking it.

2)The pilot was ready to take the risk head on.But as he was tearing through the storm,he was repeatedly questioning his decision. His compass stopped working, his radio would n't make contact. The plane was tumbling in the storm. It was becoming difficult to fly the plane. He was in deep mess.

3)The narrator says this intently as he had a kind of nightmare up in the clouds. He had an experience with the Dakota and he was quite relieved as he walked away from it.

4)When the narrator asked the lady about the black aeroplane and its pilot at the control tower, the lady was surprised. There was no other aircraft flying in the air that night according to the radar. The pilot came across as an absurd person in front of the lady.

5)I opine that the narrator's own courage and determination helped him in that stormy night. The sight of the black aeroplane was only a figment of his imagination.

The Ball Poem;NCERT Solutions and Summary for Class 10

                               The Ball Poem
                                                -John Berryman

Please tap on the image once to get a more sharper and legible copy of the book.

Summary:
'The Ball Poem' by John Berryman revolves around the experience of loss of a boy who loses his ball down the gutter.

The poem starts with the ball bouncing and going into the water.A spasm of sadness covers him.He is grief-stricken by then. Now,he is completely upset over his loss.He stands there completely motionless and shaking from the bottom of his heart.

The poet thinks it is useless to console the boy and give him explanations which would make him a bit happy. The poet would n't intrude on the boy then.Another ball or the money to buy him another ball is useless. This was because many childhood memories of tne boy were attached to the ball.

The boy then realises that in this world of possessions, things will come and go.Money is external as it cannot buy back the memories which would be associated with the things a person owns.He learns slowly how to cope up with loss.He begins to understand the nature of loss. The boy also becomes more aware of the fact that loss is universal and one needs to put up a brave face in such times.

Difficult Words:
1)Rigid:Stiff and motionless.
2)Intrude on:To interfere in a certain situation.
3)Dime:Ten cents or 1/10th of a Dollar.
4)Epistemology:It is the study of the nature of                                  knowledge itself.

Rhyme Scheme:
Free Verse

Figures of Speech:
1)Metaphor:The boy's ball is metaphorically                               associated with his young days and                       happy innocence.
2)Alliteration:"And no one buys a new ball back."
3)Anaphora:"What is the boy, what, what is he to                         do?"
4)Assonance:"Boy, now,who lost"
5)Repetition:Use of the word "Ball".
6)Asyndeton:A dime,another ball,is worthless.

NCERT Questions:
A) Thinking about the Poem.

1)The poet didn't intrude on the boy to console him because he wants him to grow up.He wants the boy to become mature and responsible in this world. The poet could have easily got the boy a new ball but he practises tough love so that the boy could understand loss and get the lesson to face losses in life.

2)According to the poet,it seems the boy was quite attached to the ball for quite a long time. So,when he loses his ball,he starts trembling and grief engulfs him.But now the ball is gone,he starts to experience for the first time the meaning of loss.

3)"In the world of possessions" is a phrase quite meaningful. It means that we live in a world where material possessions are of prime importance. If the boy wants to genuinely grow up,he needs to taste failure nd loss.Nobody can keep going on in the one direction.Ups and downs are the fellow passengers of teh journey called life.

4)No,it seems he has not lost anything earlier. This is suggested by the line :"He senses first responsibility" and words such as "Now".

5)The poet says that the boy is learning the lesson of responsibility from the loss of the ball.He is learning how to cope with loss in life.Loss is universal and everybody experiences it one or the other time. The poet thinks that he should n't intrude on the boy.He feels that the boy must have the knowledge of loss as he may lose something more precious tomorrow. He must learn that loss is a part of this world.

About Author:
Liam O’Flaherty, (born August 28, 1896, Inishmore, Aran Islands, County Galway, Ireland—died September 7, 1984, Dublin), Irish novelist and short-story writer whose works combine brutal naturalism, psychological analysis, poetry, and biting satire with an abiding respect for the courage and persistence of the Irish people. He was considered to be a leading figure of the Irish Renaissance.

NCERT Questions:
A)Thinking about the Text.

1)The young seagull was afraid to fly because he couldn't muster up courage to take the flight. He thought his wings were weak and the vast expanse of sea was also adding to his fears.

There is always some amount of fear and hesitation in doing a work in doing a work or an action for a first time. Some people are timid and learn slowly whereas others are fast in learning things.

I think it is equally challenging for a human baby to take his first step.He always has this apprehension in mind that he might fall.

2)"The sight of the maddened him" suggests how hungry the bird was.For almost 2 days,he had n't anything and this was completely messing him up both mentally and physically. When his sight fell on the scrap of fish in his mother's beak,he was very excited and started making bird noises.
We think that this was a temptation which made take the dive.

3)The seagull's parents were quite concerned for him. They were doing them everything from upbraiding to cajoling him to make him fly.It was an instinctive avian trait to fly and he will not be able to do so,a lot of problems would arise for him.As he was a bird, all his movements would be governed by the fact that if he would be able to fly or not.

4)This story presents us with a very important message which can prove to be game-changer for you. There are many moments in our lives when fear overpowers us.But,we must remain resilient during those times. We need to move forward and must not let fear take the steering wheel of our life. One needs to gain confidence and overcome fear in order to succeed in one' efforts if he has no wrongdoings.

Summary:
"The Thief's Story" by Ruskin Bond is a small tale which certainly explains how trust is very important in every relationship one keeps. The story is narrated by a thief who tells how he robbed his master but returned to him because for the first time he felt guilty.

Hari Singh was a teenager.Though he was just 15,he was very experienced in robbing people. He approached Anil while he was watching a wrestling match.Anil was tall and lean and looked easy-going and simple from Hari Singh's eyes.

He tried flattering him.Anil asked him his name and he told he was Hari Singh. However,it was a fake name as he changed his name every month in order to keep himself ahead of his  previous employers and police.

After a bit of conversation,Hari Singh told Anil that he wanted to work for him.Anil told him that he cannot pay him. This made Hari Singh a bit disappointed but again he asked that if Anil could feed him.Anil asked if he could cook and to this Hari Singh replied in affirmation.Anil said that if he can cook,he can feed him.

That night,Anil took Hari Singh to his quaters over the Jumna Sweet Shop and told him that he could sleep on the balcony. The meal Hari Singh cooked that night however was terrible as Anil gave it to a stray dog.Anil told him to be just off but later on patted him on his head and told him that he will teach him how to cook.He also taught him to write his own name and even promised to teach him to write full sentences also. All this was slowly opening new horizons for Hari Singh. He soon realised that once he could write whole sentences,he can achieve limitless success.

His working experience with Anil was quite pleasant too.He would make tea in the morning and then buy the supplies for the day.He would make a rupee from buying these supplies.

He then described that Anil made money by fits and starts. He would borrow one week and lend the next.He made a living by writing for magazines. This seemed a queer way to make money to Hari Singh.

One evening,Hari Singh came home with a bundle of notes. He told Hari Singh that he just sold a book to a publisher.Hari Singh saw him tuck the money under the mattress.

Hari Singh convinced himself that he is not paid by Anil and most probably he will waste the money on his friends. He was certain that he would have to rob Anil.

Anil was fast asleep and Hari Singh made a plan to rob and get away from him.He considered that if he could take the money and run away,he could catch a train to Lucknow. He slipped out of his blanket and crept upto the bed.

His hand slid under the mattress and he drew them out stealthily. At this point,Anil turned in his sleep towards Hari Singh. He was startled and was quickly crawled out of the room.

When he was on the road,he began to run.He slowed down to a walk and counted the money. It was 600 rupees. He dashed to the station and directly went to the platform.

The train was just moving out and he could have easily caught it.But,something held him back and he could not board the train. He hesitated and lost the chance to get away.

As he was standing on the platform alone,he realised something very deep. From his experience as a thief,he knew that Anil would feel very sad after discovering the theft. And the sadness would be because Hari Singh had played with his trust.

He went back to the bazaar and sat down in the shelter of the clock tower. He felt for the notes and they were damp. His thoughts again went back to Anil.He thought how could n't cook his meals, run to the bazaar or learn to write whole sentences anymore.

A very significant realisation dawned upon him that learning full sentences could bring him more money one day than stealing. He was almost compelled to return back to Anil.

He hurried back to the room feeling very nervous. He quietly opened the door and crept into the head of the bed.As he found the edge of the mattress and slipped the notes back into their original place.

Next morning,Anil had already made the tea and gave him a fifty-rupee note.He said that he had made some money yesterday and Hari Singh would be paid regularly now.

Hari Singh found the note was still damp.Hari Singh now knew that Anil had found about the theft but he kept quiet.

Hari Singh smiled in his most appealing way and this time the smile came by itself.

4)Misjudged:Form a wrong opinion or conclusion                            about something.
5)Patted:Touch quickly and gently with the flat of                    the hand.
6)Appealing:Attractive and interesting.

About Author:
Ruskin Bond(19 May 1934----)is an Indian author of British descent. His first novel, The Room on the Roof, received the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1957. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 for Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra, his novel in English.

NCERT Questions:
A)Think About It.

1)Hari Singh's attitude towards education is quite applaudable as he is well-aware of the benefits of education instead of being a theif. His views on education does n't change as we progress in the text.

Hari Singh returns to Anil in order not to destroy the trust Anil had vested in him.He knew Anil would become sad when he would realise that Hari Singh was a fraud. All this would make Hari Singh look bad in Anil's eyes.

2)Although Anil knew that Hari Singh had robbed his money,he didn't hand him over to the cops. This was because Anil didn't want to spill the beans and make Hari Singh guilty when he had actually returned which is very rare.Anil was also aware that if Hari Singh was sent to prison,he would never be able to leave his practice of robbery.

Most people, however, wouldn't have done so.Anil is way different from others as he wishes to reform Hari Singh by forgiving or educating him.

B)Talk About It.

1)Yes,there are many people in our society who are like Anil and Hari Singh. These characters are not too good to be real because there are many people in our society who still aspire to reform others or respect other's trust in them.

2)Yes,we do think that there have been many significant details in the story which states that Anil is a struggling writer.Hari Singh has mentioned how Anil made money by fits and starts. And,sometimes he borrowed and sometimes he lent also explains his behaviour.

3)Yes,there are many Hari Singhs around us.They are thieves but not by choice but by circumstances.

We can definitely visualize that harsh conditions must have forced Hari Singh to become a thief. He must have found no solace from anyone and would had to choose this path, even if he knew it was not the right one.

4)I think the story is set in the Nothern plains of India considering the fact that there are mentions of Lucknow and Jumna in the text.

Mostly,Hindi is spoken in those places with a regional dialect in the speech. No,we don't think English is spoken in those parts of India.

Summary:
This poem revolves around the contrasts between a tiger in a jungle and a tiger in a cage.It describes how even animals long for freedom and liberty.

Stanza-1:
In the above lines, the poet describes a tiger in the zoo living in a cage.He quietly roams around his tiny cage as compared to his habitat in the jungle. The last line shows he is quiet but he is definitely angry.

Stanza-2:
In this stanza, the poet describes a tiger in the jungle living freely.Sliding through long grass,he is waiting for his prey.He is hiding near the pool of water where deers usually come to quench their thirst.

Stanza-3:
Again in the above lines, the poet has described a tiger in a jungle. He has asserted how the tiger would have been snarling at houses at the corner of the jungle. His claws and sharp canines symbolise his strength and physical acumen.
With his roar,he would have been terrorising the village.

Stanza-4:
Here, the poet comes back to the tiger in a cage.
Here, the tiger is locked behind the bars.He just cannot move and keeps moving around the length of the cage.He is so sad and frustrated to be confined that he ignores the visitors coming to see him.

Stanza-5:
In these lines, the poet describes the tiger in the cage. The tiger can do nothing as he is behind the bars.He keeps remembering his days in the jungle and remains sad.During the night, the last sound he can hear is the sound of the patrolling cars.He becomes nostalgic and keeps staring at the brilliant stars.

Difficult Words:
1)Stalks:(Here)Move around quietly.
2)Rage:Anger.
3)Plump:A fat and stout organism.
4)Snarling:Making an angry sound.
5)Fangs:A large sharp tooth, especially a canine                 tooth of a dog or wolf.
6)Brilliant:Bright.

Poetic Devices:
1)Enjabment:Line 2 and 5 have no punctuation                           marks in 3rd line.
2)Alliteration:Use of 'h' in "he hears".
3)Assonance:Use of vowel sound 'i' i.e. "in his                              vivid strips" and "with his brilliant".
4)Oxymoron:"Quiet Rage".
5)Personification:The tiger is referred to as 'he'.
6)Consonance:Use of 's' sound i.e. 'stalks','his'                                and 'stripes'.
7)Metaphor:Tiger's paws are compared to                                  velvet.(Pads of Velvet)

Rhyme Scheme:
abcb

NCERT Questions:
A)Thinking about the Poem.

1)i)CAGE:
He stalks in his vivid strips.
The few steps of his cage.
His strength behind bars.
Stalking the length of his cage.
Ignoring visitors.
He hears the last voice at night.

JUNGLE:
He should be lurking in shadow.
Sliding through long grass.
He should be snarling around houses.
Terrorising the village!

ii)CAGE:
Rage
Cell
Bars
Visitors
Patrolling
JUNGLE:
Lurking
Grass
Deer
Terrorising
Snarling

2)i)This refers to the tiger's padded paws living in forced luxury. His steps are quiet as they are confined to the limited steps he can take in the cage. Here, the 'anger' and 'ferocity' of the tiger is suppressed as he is in a limited space and he can terrorize no village. The quietness is somewhat symbolic of suppressed natural traits.

ii)And even at night, the tiger is not at rest.He is completely aware of his surroundings and becomes restless everytime he thinks about his freedom being curtailed. The 'brilliant' means luminous in above lines. And he keeps wondering if he will ever be able to go back to the jungle.

The repetition helps the poet bring about a more beautiful touch in the poem. This repetition also helps the poem memorize better.

Summary:
"Long Walk to Freedom" by Nelson Mandela is a small extract from his autobiography. In this chapter,he described his experience during the installation of South Africa's first democratic government and what made him work hard and struggle to achieve freedom for the coloured people of Africa.

The date 10th of May in 1994 was very clear in his mind and will be forever etched in his mind.
The day was bright and clear. For the past few days,he was surrounded by global leaders who had come to pay their respects and regards before the inauguration ceremony. The inauguration was quite special for South Africa as a nation as it was the largeat gathering of international leaders on South African soil.

The inauguration ceremony was organised to take place in the Sandstone Amphitheatre. This was a victory for the people of South Africa in true terms.Because once it used to be a seat of White supremacy whereas now it was the site for the establishment of South Africa's first democratic and non-racial government.

On that day,he was accompanied by his daughter Zenani. On the podium,Mr.de Klerk was first sworn in as second deputy President. Then,Thabo Mbeki was sworn in as first deputy President. When it was Mandela's turn to take oath as President,he pledged to obey and uphold the constitution and devote himself to the well being of the people. He describes this installation to be a common victory for justice and peace along with freedom.

After a few moments,a chevron of South African Impala jets flew above them leaving a trail of black, red, green, blue and golden colours which were actually on the new South African flag. This  not only symbolised the pin-pointed precision of the military force but also the loyalty of military to the democracy.

On that,he was overwhelmed remembering his and his nation's past.He thought how the white-skinned people of South Africa patched up their differences and erected a system of racial domination over the dark-skinned peoe of their own land. The structure they ended up creating was one of the most inhumane societies, the world had ever witnessed.

He sadly recounted his past in his mind thinking about how a few years ago,a man from his community could not fulfill the responsibilities he/she has towards his/her community and society.Any person from his community who tried to live as a human being was punished and isolated. He was inevitably ripped off from his family to live without dignity in life.

He described how he had no ide ato join the freedom struggle or anything. As a boy,he was free to roam around, play in the fields and not troubled by anyone. However,as he grew up,he realised that his boyhood freedom was only an illusion. As a young man,he had no liberty or rights to live a normal or lawful life.

Then,as he saw more of the society he was living in,he found that freedom of everyone who looked like him was curtailed. He,therefore, joined the African National Congress for bring a revolutionary change and make apartheid unlawful. He explained how this intense desire for the freedom of the people to live their lives with dignity and self-respect which transformed his life. This quest for bringing freedom to his community has made all the difference.

About Author:
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela(18th July,1918-5th December,2013)was a South African
anti-apartheid revolutionary, statesman and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.

NCERT Questions:
A)Thinking about the Text.

1)A huge number of global leaders came to attend the sworn-in ceremony of the African leaders because after a long time, South Africa had become independent from Apartheid. It signified the triumph of equality over racism.

2)Mandela by this statement means that he also has the same ideals as other African patriots that is to make South Africa a nation upholding the ideals such as equality and democracy. This statement also signifies that all the sacrifices the other freedom fighters had made had finally bore fruit.

3)We completely agree that the "depths of oppression" create "heights of character".Mandela illustrates this by quoting the names of his late comrades in the struggle against apartheid. This can be compared to the situation of our country during the freedom struggle which saw the advent of many great global personalities.

4)Mandela's perspective started changing about freedom as when he grew up.Mandela had no specific zeal to be free but as he grew up and went to different places, his outlook went under a complete makeover and the definition of freedom changed ffor Nelson Mandela.

5)The quest for freedom and liberty from apartheid and live life in a respectful manner completely changed his life.He was transformed into a bold man from a timid and frightened man he was earlier. He had to live anonymously on his own land.He had to sacrifice his family. But,this intense desire to gain independence for his community made him so determined that he finally took it.
